Dear Entrepreneur,

It wasn't too long ago that I was living with my grandma in her one-bedroom apartment just about to embark on my last year of high school.

I was 17-years old but I wasn't your typical teenager.

You see, prior to that, I had lived with my mom, sister, and grandma in what some would call the inner city "projects." My mom always worked (in fact she was a transcriptionist at a hospital) --- she just never made enough for us to keep the cable on, buy name brand shoes, or live in a better neighborhood with controlled street lights.

I can't say things were that bad, though. I had a loving, church-going, close-knit family. We just didn't have the money to take vacations, live in our own home, bring our lunch to school... those kinds of things.

...So needless to say, I always wanted to be the one to change things...

And that's what I sought out to do.

  • I sold Avon® at 12.
  • Signed my mom up in my downline (...signed grandma up in her downline).
  • Joined Prepaid Legal Services® at 14.
  • Started a stationery company at 15.
  • Taught piano lessons to neighborhood kids at 15 ½ (I was good at hearing songs off the radio and playing them on the piano).
  • Was president of my school at 16.
  • Launched a site called Shop2x.com at 16 ½.
  • Joined SMC and launched J. Griggs Home Shopper's Club at 16 ½.

If anyone was going to rescue my family from the hood, it was going to be me.

There was no doubting it. Even though I hadn't read the book, "Think And Grow Rich" yet, I had that burning desire Napoleon Hill writes about.

I would go to office supply stores like "Staples," and "Office Depot," run to the back of the store, and sit in the big black executive chairs. I'd get a kick out of placing my size 13 hi-tops on the cherry wood classic oak desks as I spun around in the chair to face the matching file cabinet and credenza on the other side.

While most kids were asking for Playstations and Nintendo 64s, I was hooked on becoming a successful businessman and being able to finally afford a classic office setup one day.

It didn't matter that Avon didn't work out for me (my guy friends teased me for selling cosmetics anyway).

It didn't matter that every venture I had started up until this point hadn't produced the results I'd hope for.

In my mind, if I just kept trying... something would pull through.

"And at 17, something life-changing happened..."

I don't know what hit me but I got this unique idea to start teaching people how to play piano by ear online.

In fact, I remember the exact day I gave my mom $70 bucks and asked her to front her debit card number so I could buy the domain name, HearandPlay.com, from Network Solutions (that was when dotcoms were about $70 a pop).

It was a Sunday... and a few hours after I had finished playing piano at church, where I got the brilliant idea to teach people online. August 6, 2000 was the day.

And yeah... I had only made a whopping $800 bucks online with my last venture, shop2x.com, selling everything from flowers, long distance, and chocolate --- to toys, clothes, and vacations through affiliate links (which didn't last too long)...

...But this wasn't going to be like shop2x.com.

This was going to be all about my passion.

Heck, I had tried everything else and even though most people told me that I had a lifetime to figure out what I wanted to do and to slow down "young man" --- I resisted.

This one felt special. I felt it.

And it was.

By graduation, Hearandplay.com was up to about $500 / month. I'd get orders for my 60-pg piano workbook I created, go to the office store, photocopy more books from my "master" book (which was photocopied itself), rush over to the post office... talk to the early eBayers in line also trying to ship out packages, then get home to do my homework... (when I did it).

That was the life.

"From $500 to $8,000 a month overnight..."

Now living in the dorms at the University of California, Irvine, I managed to get sales of my piano workbook constant at about $500-$750 a month.

But I wanted more.

This wasn't going to give me that cherry wood classic office set and my own place. I wasn't going to drive the car of my dreams making $500 a month. Heck, if I didn't have grants and scholarships, I'd be out of luck.

Something had to change.

So I began to research every way I could get more visitors to my site.

How to sell to them.

How to convert them.

How to get them flooding to my site even when I couldn't post in forums (since that was my main strategy in high school).

And that's when I ran across the course that would change the way I market online forever. It was Corey Rudl's course.

I ripped his course apart. I devoured it. "If he could do it," I thought to myself, "then I can too."

A month or so later, I had my new salespages up. I mean a long salespage.

This was new for my audience. Before, all they'd get was a photo of my book and a few bullet points.

This, however, was a 20-pg sales letter convincing them on why they should play piano by ear, who I was, and how exactly I could help them. The money-back guarantee sealed the deal at the end.

This went up March 1, 2002...

"I woke up to $500 in sales the very next day..."

"This must not be true."

This guy keeps saying 'You've Got Mail' and every time I refresh my aol e-mail, there's a new e-mail titled:

New Order Notice: Jane Doe, $69.00

Now, you have to remember that prior to this, I pulled teeth to make $500 bucks a month... $700 and some change if I was lucky.

But now I had awaken to an inbox full of orders --- $500 to be exact... and it was only 8:30 a.m.. My heart was racing. It almost seemed like everything I had worked for since 12, every venture I had ever embarked on... it just seemed like everything led to this. It was a real surreal moment.

So what do I do? Do I go to sociology class or do I skip class and start fulfilling these 8 orders?

Well, I skipped class.

"And when I got back to my dorm that night,
I had $1,100.00 in sales waiting for me..."

"Grandma... grandma, I just made $1,100 on the internet!" I shouted over the phone.

"Boy... what have you got yourself into??!" my grandma shouted back.

"My piano course, remember that?"

"I just sold 17 of them in ONE day!"

And the thing is...

I never ever made just $500 a month AGAIN. Never.

I won't say it stayed at $1,100 per day (it would eventually get there stably over time). That month, it averaged out to be about $300 a day.

For the rest of 2002, I'd make about $8000-$10,000 a month as you can see by my sales growth video, starting mid-July when I switched to 1shoppingcart.com, the e-commerce system I've been using ever since.

You want to know the best part about it though?

It's the fact that since the turn of the millennium, I've:

  • Been able to do what I love... my passion.

It's sort of like in some networking marketing companies where the reps get so fixated on recruiting new reps for instant bonuses that no one is actually selling the products or services. Soon the companies collapse (I won't mention any names).

Within minutes, people call my office excited that "Jermaine Griggs" just left a message on their answering machine. Oh yeah, and how to find the right voiceblast services that let you have the choice of doing answering machine messages only (this is key when trying to sound personal).
  • ADVANCED: How to use voiceblasting in conjunction with my "save the sale" technique to offer mega good deals to subscribers who have reached "qualifying" pages on your site. Then once they buy the product, they're taken off the "save the sale" list for that particular product. Imagine doing this for every product? (I feel like writing more here but my top secrets are for people who value me enough to pay me what I'm worth).
  • My personal take on why 9 out of 10 business fail within the first five years and how I stood the test of time (going on eight years)!
  • How I use Google's free Website Optimizer tool to conduct extensive multivariate tests on all my sales pages (like testing multiple sub-headlines with multiple headlines with multiple opening paragraphs with multiple bullet points... it's amazing what you can do with that thing). It puts classic A-B split testing to shame, even though there's still some situations where I use it too. (Most marketers throw this "multivariate testing" word around to sound "advanced" but most don't have a clue. I discovered this at one seminar when I started talking about all this stuff and no one else seemed to be testing this way yet... but were floored by my results).
  • The power of click tracking and heat maps and how you can use this form of testing to find out where people are reading and clicking on your pages. In fact you can even visually see where people are clicking based on where they've come from. You may find that "Google" people read and click different links on your page than yahoo visitors (...this works for affiliates too).
  • ADVANCED: How I altered third party services like 1shoppingcart to do exactly what I want. According to 1shoppingcart personnel, I'm the first and only person to upsell items at the bottom of my order forms. Yup... just like Amazon.com. A customer puts in all their credit card information... then before pressing submit, they are presented with a number of complimentary products with a simple checkbox that literally adds the product to the cart right at that moment. This isn't the normal functionality of the cart. I spent thousands of dollars figuring this out and have made it back 30 times over with last minute value-adds my customers can't resist. I've created multiple variations of this with dozens of products (but this isn't the only "add-on" I've created for them and other services. Read below to see some other stuff I've done).
  • ADVANCED: How I automatically download orders (no human intervention) from my shopping cart and swallow them into a custom-built fulfillment management system that then auto-exports a pdf of pending orders to a company that fulfills each order, scans back in the tracking number, and automatically sends this number back to 1shoppingcart to e-mail the customer. I know it sounds all advanced but it's very simple. I've done the hardest part and I'll even give you the name and hookup with the "techie" who did all this for me.
  • "Front row" access to observe future ideas I'm developing (birthday marketing tool, social gaming online score-keeping site, instant backend selling on the thank you page of your order form without the customer having to re-enter their information, mp3 parsing, which will allow my visitors to click on personalized audio buttons that say "Hi <Jane>, welcome to day 3 of your training I've quickly put together for you." It's crazy what you can do with a little creativity and technology). Let's just say I don't sleep.
  • How I create video products ready to be duplicated in less than 72 hours. Quite frankly, I was tired of waiting 3-4 months for no-good editors to finish my piano videos so after tons of research, I found out how to have 80% of my video editing done immediately after recording. The other 20% just involves adding a few titles and "extras." It's literally a 3-day process and I'll pull the curtains back on my operation for my club members.
  • How I get my cd-roms and audio cds duplicated for $.21 cents and my dvd courses duplicated for $.31 cents (the silk screening is free after the $40 set up charge) and they even shrink wrap for free if you buy their $.16 cent dvd cases. Out the door... $.40 cents at most. I'll give you access to my contact, who currently holds the record as one of the cheapest duplication houses in the country (yet most of their clients come by referral so you can't expect to find them widely publicized online).   • How I used Google's new Print Ads service to place ads in newspapers across the country without ever talking to one sales rep. Most marketers haven't explored this option but you'll get the nitty gritty on this from me, and a look at the ads they created in hours!
  • How I set up a full monitoring and reports system that sends sales and new subscriber counts to my cell phone every hour (... this may be too much for some folks but I enjoy not having to log in to my cart at all during the day). What's more, if any of my third party services are down, I'm hit with a text message within 15 seconds and notified when they're back up. I've called services the minute they went down and have witnessed their technical support departments amazed at how fast I caught a problem that just occurred less than a minute before.
  • My product development philosphy and how I repurpose content to provide a never-ending supply of bonuses, online "surprise" value add-ons, and free "lead-generating" content for my community.
  • ADVANCED: How I use address book importing (gmail, yahoo, aol, msn, hotmail) and incentive-based contests to encourage community users to invite their friends to the site.
